Yamagata Osamu - Professor of Runes
« Thread Started on Jun 2, 2008, 12:15am »

Out-of-Character Information
Name: Jay
Reason for Applying: The Potterverse has always been fun, but I never found a community who’s background I enjoyed. This community looks different and exciting. Also, the school lacks a runes professor!
Resumé:
Sodalitas Academy Characters Played: Adrian d'Epinay, Liam Schram
EMO-RP Characters Played: Rethen Kel'Sviet, Wu-Xia

Character Information
Name: Yamagata Osamu
Age: 25
Birthday: July 17
Gender: Male
Blood Status: Half-blood
School Attended & House (if applicable): Okinawa Magic Academy - Ka (Fire) House, Professor training at Tokyo Magical Institute
Position: Professor of Runes
Wand: Kaya wood, 10 inches, rigid, core of shed kitsune fur
Other Info of Note: He is known to use sutras and Shinto prayer strips as runic catalysts to avoid inscribing runes in do-or-die situations. These catalysts do not have the strength or longevity of individually inscribed runes.

Family:
-Father: Yamagata Taro
-Mother: Yamagata Ryoko
-Siblings: Yamagata Soushi (younger), Yamagata Kiyoshi (older), Yamagata Ayeka (Younger)
-Other: Grandfather – Yamagata Daichi

Appearance: The only thing average about Osamu is his height. His body is lean and lightly toned due to his grandfather’s instruction in aikido and Okinawan kobudo. His hair and eyes are styled to fit his energetic and boisterous personality: they’re vibrant and help him stand out. He loves his earrings, having many varying dangly types, but his cross earrings are his favorites. His clothing styles are varied. He does prefer collared or button up shirts to tee-shirts. He also likes palm or fist gloves or wrist covers, but hates full gloves. He does have traditional Japanese clothing as well, it’s just hidden. He has a slightly insane love for scarves. He also has several different characters and runes tattooed on his body.

Personality: Osamu is boisterous to a fault. He likes to laugh and joke and party. He loves the nightlife and enjoys the club scene, possibly a little too much. He is generally nice and gives people the benefit of the doubt, but his boisterous mentality also can be quick to anger. His own sense of righteous fury can sometimes get him into trouble. He also has a protective streak that tends to place him in the middle of conflict. Not the best mediator, Osamu tends to cause arguments rather than solving them. He also has a soft spot for kids.

Likes: Vibrant music, clubbing, dancing, singing, mountains, nature in general
Dislikes: Mean people, broccoli, sluggish people, people that adhere rigidly to tradition

History: Born Naha in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, Osamu was the second child born to the Yamagata family. He was raised at the family’s ancestral home near one of the shrines outside of Naha.
Osamu was part of a long line of shrine guardians. The Yamagata family had defended Shinto shrines and sacred spots for generations. They were employed because of the fierce loyalty and because of their ability to commune with the kami. At least, that was the belief of the Japanese people until Western wizards landed on their shores. It was then discovered that many of the shrine guardians, like the Yamagata family, were wizards. However, there was not much change in the training of shrine guardians until post World War II.

In the reconstruction phase, a melding of Japanese and Western techniques magical techniques were developed. One of the centers of these new techniques was the Okinawa Magic Academy. Under the newly developed Department of Magical Regulation, these academies flourished across the entire nation. It was under this academy system that Osamu would be trained.

Most of his early life was spent in private tutoring at home with his father and grandfather. His father taught him the academics he would need as well as world history and different odd skills. His grandfather schooled him in the skills of aikido, Okinawan kobudo, and runic powers. He also learned the traditional history of the shrine guardians. But his training was not all in duties that should be upheld by a member of the Yamagata family. His mother taught him cooking and music and English, a language she herself found necessary.

When he was of age, he enrolled in Okinawa Magic Academy. His skills in runes quickly shined. He also excelled in potions and metallurgy. Basically, his extreme guiding principle when it came to magic was patience. But it ran in stark contrast to his personality. He was sorted into the Ka, or Fire, house at Okinawa MA. This House, as with all Ka houses across the Japanese Magical Educational System, was known for their hot blooded specialists of offensive magic: Curses and Jinxes specifically. But Osamu simply explained that a fire could burn for days if tended properly. So he welcomed and understood his sorting.

After graduating from Okinawa MA, Osamu applied and was accepted to the Tokyo Magical Institution for a practical, two year teacher training program to qualify for his Certification of Professorship. Two years later, he completed the program and set out. He was 20.

He traveled for a year or so, journeying across Asia and into Europe and finally America. That is where he stumbled upon Haunting Academy. He noticed a lack of a runes professor at the school. He applied and was accepted to the school. He was but 21. Now, four years later, Yamagata Osamu returns for his 5th year as Professor of Runes at Haunting Academy

Class Description:
Ancient Runes: Osamu’s goal with this class is to not only teach runes from all parts of the world, but to demonstrate the effective use of runes and teach students the ability of these magical devices. He wants to emphasize the practical use of runes as well as characters and hieroglyphics. First through third years will focus on memorization, translation, and practical use (such as using runes to create areas of prolonged cooling or heating). Upper years will branch out into more diverse fields and will focus on more depth in reference to runes and applications with more advanced runes.
Magical Metallurgy and Gems: This class was designed as an upper level elective. For those students going into fields requiring knowledge of metals and gems, potions or wand making are two examples, this course seeks to explore the powers associated with different metals and different gems. It will involve practical applications with forging items and utilizing runes upon the forged devices. A prerequisite of at least Ancient Runes – 4th Year would be required.

Everything seems to be in order here. Osamu-sensei is a very creative and well-written character, and I look forward to seeing him in the RP.
