The House of Passion [All Rutilus students]

Professor Upsetta Haunting was going to enjoy tonight very much.

It still seemed odd to her that she was a Professor, and here at Haunting Academy. She had always considered it somewhat of a conflict of interest for Hauntings to teach at their own school; they owned it, yes, and others taught there. That was how it had always been. Not so anymore. Revenge for so doggedly pursuing her, Gayle had called it. The thought gave Upsetta a wry sort of amusement.

All things aside, though, she was here now, and that was what mattered. The Rutilus common room - in addition to its usual dark, rich splendor - had been decked and draped in decorations of red and gold. The portrait of the woman for whom she had been named, the founder of Rutilus House, hung above the mantel. It alone carried no additional adornments, for it needed none. The massive gold frame encasing it was enough. There were plenty of desserts, some of them light but most of them rich and decadent, arranged on tables around the perimeter, but the chairs and couches had all been arranged to face a single focal point: the fireplace.

Near the fireplace, next to and just a little in front of it, sat a winged armchair upholstered in all black leather. Upsetta herself had conjured it there not long ago, should she need to sit during her speech. A large table on the other side of the fireplace held the boxes of ties and ribbons for first-year students, and a few other parcels to boot. Upsetta herself, however, was neither sitting in her armchair nor standing near the table.

She was in Animagus form - that of a very large black panther with black-rimmed, orange, feline eyes - curled up on a rug in front of the fireplace as though asleep. The Prefects, of course, had all been warned of this, and a few volunteers were already stationed to reassure startled students. They had also been instructed to make sure the first-years sat near the front, as much of the meeting was for their benefit. All things arranged, Upsetta was left to lie curled up in her decidedly comfortable spot, waiting for her students to arrive.

Iliana was momentarily startled upon entering the common room a bit early, to find a black panther curled comfortably beside a black leather chair near the fireplace. But her memory served her very well. She recalled the researching she had been doing on animagi and clearly remembered the passage about Upsetta Haunting's animagus form being.. what else... A black panther.

Tension drained from her shoulders and the third-year took a seat nearer to the back to watch everyone's reactions throughout the revelation of their head of house's ability.

Nothing prepared Marquita for the shock of seeing a large black panther near the fireplace in the common room. Squeaking in surprise, the fifth-year had to be reassured by the students stationed in the room and forced something of calmness into her posture as she took a seat.

Why ever did the professor have to shock everyone so? The blonde shook herself internally as the other students entered the common room as well.
